As the new recycling stations continue to be installed in buildings across campus, now is a great time to make some commitments (or renew your existing ones) to becoming more sustainable in your everyday life as a Husker!
Being 鈥渟ustainable鈥 can, at first, seem like a big, daunting task. Do I need to change my entire lifestyle? Eat differently? Never leave my dorm again?
The answer to each of these is no. There are plenty of small things each of us can do to make our campus a little more sustainable鈥娾斺奾ere are five good ways to start.
1. When in Doubt, Throw it Out!
If you鈥檙e unsure of whether something is recyclable (and don鈥檛 have time to do an internet deep-dive), throw it in the landfill receptacle. Items that are not recyclable or are contaminated with foods or liquids can ruin an entire collection of recyclables, undercutting our best intentions of recycling everything at all costs.
2. Rinse Off Recyclable Items
If you do know something is recyclable, but it鈥檚 dirty (say, plastic cups of iced coffee or pizza boxes) be sure to thoroughly clean or rinse the item off before recycling.
3. Carpool to Campus
If you鈥檙e a commuter or living off campus, carpooling is an easy way to cut down on emissions (and do other fun things, like blast music on the way to class with your friends).
If you鈥檙e interested in exploring other ways of getting to campus, try walking, , skateboarding, longboarding or taking the bus!

4. Turn Off the Lights
In your dorm, classroom (when you鈥檙e not in class), and anywhere else that makes sense鈥娾斺妕urn off the lights when you leave.
5. Invest in a Water Bottle
Buying a water bottle (or thermos, or anything else that holds liquid and is reusable) can help cut down on plastic bottles. Plus, it鈥檒l help you drink more water!
