Though she鈥檚 an experienced photographer, being on assignment for Unlimited Sports and the Daily 91茄子n has put Izzy Lewis in some high-pressure situations.
Covering the Husker football opener at Arrowhead Stadium was certainly one of those situations.
鈥淪tepping into the stadium where the Kansas City Chiefs play, I kind of felt like the pressure was on,鈥 Izzy says. 鈥淚 remember thinking, 鈥極kay, I really need to lock in.鈥欌
Thankfully for Izzy, the pressure is part of the thrill of photography. Whether it鈥檚 covering the nearest stop of Chappell Roan鈥檚 tour or catching the game-winning buzzer beater at a state basketball game, she says her College of Journalism and Mass Communications (CoJMC) professors have taught her to feel confident and prepared for whatever comes her way.
鈥淥ur professors tell us to always act like we know what we're doing and not be freaked out that we're 鈥榡ust students,鈥欌 Izzy explains. 鈥淗aving them tell us that we deserve to be in these situations as actual journalists with a job to do has really stuck with me and given me a lot of confidence.鈥
That confidence has helped Izzy grow as a leader in Unlimited Sports, the student-run sports media outlet in CoJMC's Experience Lab. Stepping in to a new role as a student lead this fall, Izzy helps manage the inflow of stories from over 100 student journalists.
鈥淓ach student has a minimum of five stories each semester, so it鈥檚 a lot. Being flexible and figuring out what works best for each student has been something that鈥檚 really helped me in the role.鈥
Adaptability comes naturally to Izzy, stemming from the need to think on her feet as a photographer. It鈥檚 also helped her as a student.
鈥淚鈥檓 constantly learning 鈥 and, if I don鈥檛 know how to do something, there are so many amazing professors and talented peers I can lean on to help me figure it out.鈥
Izzy is a sophomore journalism, sports media and communication, and advertising and public relations major from Hickman, NE.
