When Avery arrived on campus, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in healthcare and do something that would help others. After reflecting on her own experiences being born with cleft lip and palate, she realized exactly who she wanted to help: people like her.  

鈥淕rowing up with facial differences comes with a lot of different challenges,鈥� Avery says. 鈥淐oming into college and wondering what I wanted to study, I kept remembering my speech therapy years and how cool it would be to help kids like me who grew up differently.鈥�  

Throughout her childhood, Avery required several reconstructive surgeries and speech therapy to help with feeding and motor speech issues common to people born with cleft lip and palate. Studying communication sciences and disorders in the College of Education and Human Sciences, she saw a way to make an impact on kids going through similar challenges.  

鈥淭herapy gave me so much confidence, and I just want to share that with kids with facial differences to help them be confident, too.鈥� 

This year, Avery has been working in the Learning Lab for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, doing research that鈥檚 helping her gain experience in the field of care that was so meaningful to her.  

"It鈥檚 so interesting to have a window into how people might鈥檝e worked with me as a kid and seeing what they were trying to get me to understand. Now, as an adult learning how to work with participants, I see how you need to build rapport with people, keep them comfortable and ultimately work toward goals together.鈥�  

In addition to working in the research lab, Avery will be starting similar research work with Boys Town in Omaha, where she鈥檒l be helping study how environmental factors can affect language development.  

鈥淚 think a lot of the reason that I was able to get this job is because I've already been working in a research lab,鈥� she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be a lot of work to do both, but I鈥檓 really excited to jump into it.鈥�  

Looking beyond her undergraduate career, Avery hopes to stay on campus for grad school. 

鈥淭here are a lot of really great opportunities for me to do what I want to do here. I really love 91茄子, so I鈥檓 hoping I鈥檒l get to stay here for a while.鈥�
